多様性に溢れて　Elements of Diversity

こんにちは、3児ワーママのマミントンです 。

前回の投稿で現在私が視聴しているアメリカの超常現象ドラマのお話を少ししました。今回はこのドラマに描かれたヒューマンドラマの一部についてお話ししたいと思います。

このドラマに登場するキャラクターは多様性に溢れています。人間、狼人間、吸血鬼、妖精、天使、白人、黒人、アジア系、ラテン系、同性愛者、異性愛者、そしてそんな多様性に溢れる世界を悪魔から守るシャドウハンターと名乗る戦士達。そして人種差別や政府によるパワーハラスメントなど、現代社会で向き合うべき問題が非現実的な設定の中に取り入れられているところが魅力的です。お話は若干薄っぺらく感じるところもあるけれど、私にとっては他の人気ドラマ以上に考え深い内容が盛り込まれているように感じます。

例えばシャドウハンターのアレックと魔術師のマグナス。２人は恋に落ち、両親の反対や数々の試練を乗り越えながら関係を育みます。アレックとマグナスは男性です。そう、準主役（最終回に近づくにつれ、もはや主役並みの活躍でしたが）は同性愛者、LGBTQなのです。アレックは白人、マグナスはアジア系であり、超常現象の世界でも、同性愛者・人種・そして人間・魔術師と、３つの多様性を象徴しています。

狼男のルークは主人公のクレーリーにとっては父親のような存在。ルークは黒人の狼男、クレーリーは白人の女性でシャドウハンターです。クレーリーの母親とルークは結婚することはありませんでしたが、３人は人種を超えて家族の絆で結ばれています。

私は幼少期から父の仕事で引っ越しが多く、楽しい思い出や辛い思い出が沢山あります。言語が違って話が通じないよりも、着ている洋服が一般的でないからとか、方言やアクセントが強いからなどの理由で差別されてしまうことが悲しかったし、多分コンプレックスとして私の心のどこかに傷が残っていると思います。この経験により精神的に強くなった部分や一人で行動することへの恐怖はほぼなくなった一方で、３人の子を持つ親になった今でも他人の目や自分の立ち位置を知らず知らず気にしながら過ごしているのです。

とは言っても、私は元気ですがね（笑）。

日本においては、先日オリンピック・パラリンピック会長が女性に対する不適切な差別に当たる発言をしたばかり。アメリカは、トランプ政権により国が真っ二つに割れてしまっている。信じたくないけど、日本もアメリカも先進国なはずなのに、未だにこのような問題が日々生まれているのです。

このドラマを見ながら、そして自分の過去を思い出しながら感じること。それは人々がお互いの多様性を尊重し、お互いを大切にする世界を築かなくてはならないということ。そのために私たち一人一人が、どんな小さなことでもいいから、より良い明日になるよう努力することが大切なのです。

In my previous post, I mentioned my new favorite American drama series, Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments. Today, I want to talk a little bit about the human drama embedded in this supernatural, super-fictional, sci-fi television series that made this story so impactful in my mind.

The characters that appear in this story are filled with diversity. Human, werewolves, vampires, fairies, angels, white, black, Asian, Latin, LGBTQ, and the shadowhunter warriors who protect this world from demonic creatures. The story includes elements of discrimination, government corruption and power harassments in a supernatural setting. Some aspects of the story is a bit cheesy or shallow, but to me, there are so many elements in this story that puts me in deep thoughts about the social problems that we all face each day.

For example, Alec the shadowhunter and Magnus the 400 year old warlock fall in love, and despite opposition and challenges, they build their relationship and trust. Alec and Magnus are both male. Yes, these two who are pretty much considered as main characters for the series, are LGTBQ. In addition, Alec is white, and Magus is Asian. Within the supernatural realm, they represent a 3 dimensional diversity profile of LGBTQ, ethnicity, and shadowhunter/warlock supernatural backgrounds.

Luke the warewolf is like a father to Clary the shadowhunter. Luke is a black male, and Clary is a white female. Clary’s mother never married Luke, but the 3 have a bond so strong that they would do anything to keep each other safe.

I moved around across many borders as a child and have fond memories as well as bitter ones. Everyone must have bitter memories from their childhood, but my bitter memories include painful ones, such as being excluded from a crowd because my skin color is different, speak a language with a unique accent, or I am wearing clothes that don’t appear ordinary to those around me. Experiences like these made me sad and strong at the same time. I am not afraid to be alone or be independent, but I subconsciously care about how others perceive me and my status in the society. To some extent I have a giant scar in my heart that I pretend no longer exists, but still does.

But considering all that I went through, I think I turned out pretty okay though 🙂

In Japan, the Chairman of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics Committee recently made inappropriate sexist comments stating that committee meetings with female representation takes longer, implying and generalizing that women talk too much. He has a history of making inappropriate comments such as these, and yet he continues to hold influential positions in the Japanese society. The Trump administration in the States split the country in half. I cannot understand why, in developed countries like Japan and the States, a large group of people exist that do not have the most basic and common decency.

So what are my thoughts when I watch Shadownhunters, or remember old memories of my childhood, and think about the problems that persist in our society today… I think that we all need to respect each other for who we are. We are human beings with each a right to be happy (let’s leave out criminals and psychopaths for now). No matter how small, please do what is in your power make tomorrow a better place for ourselves, our children, our grandchildren, and for everyone to feel empowered to be who they are.
